According to NBA insider Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Brooklyn Nets could trade for Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell.
The Lakers are interested in Nets players Spencer Dinwiddie, Royce O’Neale and Dorian Finney-Smith, per NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
“If they do make a deal, it would likely be for a guard — former Nets All-Star D’Angelo Russell has been among those names floated,” Windhorst wrote. “With an expiring $20.3 million deal, Dinwiddie is the likely fulcrum in any big move before the deadline.”
Russell played two seasons for the Nets. He averaged 19.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.3 blocks and made the 2019 All-Star team. Brooklyn traded Russell to the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2019 in the blockbuster Kevin Durant sign-and-trade deal.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: D’Angelo Russell, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets Updates
Russell is averaging 17.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks this season while shooting 47.4% from the field, 41.7% from beyond the arc and 79.8% from the free-throw line. He’s making $17.3 million.
The 27-year-old Russell has a player option for next season worth $18.7 million. The Lakers tried to trade Russell to the Atlanta Hawks for Dejounte Murray, but a deal didn’t happen since Atlanta and Los Angeles couldn’t find a third team to acquire Russell.
The Lakers and Nets are both struggling this season. LAL is 24-25, 10th place in the West, while Brooklyn is 19-27, 11th place in the East.
Most NBA insiders expect the Lakers to make a move before the trade deadline since the team has played awful since winning the In-Season Tournament in Las Vegas and LeBron James and Anthony Davis have looked frustrated.
