Mavs Land Bulls’ DeMar DeRozan In Bold Trade Idea

DeMar DeRozan, Chicago Bulls, NBA Trade Rumors

An NBA front office has to juggle. They have a lot of factors to consider. They need to establish a team culture. A team also needs to manage their salary sheet and their assets. Still, nothing matters more than talent.

The Dallas Mavericks seem to be aware of that fact. They’ve got one of the most talented duos in the NBA. By rostering Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks give themselves an automatic shot at the NBA title.

With that said, this team could use some depth. What type of player should they seek? Should Dallas be looking to add 3-and-D wings? Or should they pursue another player who can create offense from scratch?

If they choose the latter route, could they pursue DeMar DeRozan of the Chicago Bulls?

The Trade Proposal

Chicago Bulls receive: C Richaun Holmes, G/F Josh Green, 2027 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – DAL)
Dallas Mavericks receive: G/F DeMar DeRozan

Talent comes first. To be more specific, top-end talent is most important. If you don’t have one of the best players in the NBA, you’re not likely to win the NBA title.

Nobody informed the Chicago Bulls. They tried to ignore these long-established rules. The Bulls put a roster together with a lot of talent. With that said, none of the players on this team are All-NBA caliber.

As a result, the Bulls have been middling. This is a mediocre team, and they have been for some time. Perhaps that’s why the Bulls are rumored to be major sellers as we approach the trade deadline.

Should they send DeRozan to the Mavericks?

Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal

Absolutely. If this deal is on the table, the Bulls should take it and run. They won’t do better for DeRozan. He’s an aging player with deficiencies on an expiring contract.

That’s why this pick is lottery-protected. If the Bulls are holding out for an unprotected first for DeRozan, they’re going to hold out past the deadline. Nobody is offering them one. A lottery protected first from a team that’s unlikely to land in a lottery is a fair return in terms of draft capital.

Moreover, they’re landing Green as a bonus. He’s an exciting young 3-and-D wing who can be part of this team moving forward. Should the Mavericks part with him?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

We mentioned DeRozan’s limitations. Let’s elaborate. DeRozan isn’t a strong defender. He’s also a hesitant three-point shooter. DeRozan has upped his volume and efficiency this year, but he still lags behind most offensive stars in that area.

What does he do well? Everything else. DeRozan is a gifted scorer who can create offense in the midrange area. He’s also developed into a dynamic playmaker. Still, as talented as he is, he may not be an optimal fit alongside Doncic.

So, the Mavericks would stagger them. In all likelihood, they’d use DeRozan as a super sixth man. If they can keep Doncic and DeRozan separate as much as possible, they’ll have a dynamic playmaker on the floor at all times. Even then, they should be able to co-exist for stretches. After all, theyre both exceedingly talented.
