Every NBA career comes to an end. Watching our favorite players wrap up their careers can be painful. It’s bound to happen. As a player ages, he’s likely to lose his effectiveness.
Look at Kyle Lowry. He was just moved from the Miami Heat to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets didn’t covet Lowry – they coveted his expiring contract. At this stage of his career, Lowry isn’t expected to be a major contributor.
With that said, he could still be a solid reserve. The Hornets are expected to buy out Lowry’s deal. If he hits the buyout market, somebody is likely to scoop him up for a limited role.
Here are three teams that we think ought to consider picking him up.
Philadelphia 76ers
This could be the last year of Lowry’s career. Why not go home? Lowry has been linked to his hometown Sixers for a long time. Is it time for him to take his talents to the City of Brotherly Love?
It depends on what Lowry wants. At this stage of his career, he isn’t likely to usurp Patrick Beverley. With that said, the Sixers could use an insurance policy. If Lowry is content to be a veteran presence who may or may not get on the floor, he may want to join the Sixers.

Sure. With that said Lowry can still shoot and make smart defensive plays. He won’t be a high usage star, but somebody could have a real basketball use for him. Could this next team pick Lowry up?
Los Angeles Lakers
Lowry won’t skip Beverley in Philly’s rotation. He could usurp Gabe Vincent. He’s been largely injured in 2023-24. What were the Lakers looking for when they signed Vincent?
Realistically, they wanted a player who could hit some threes and play solid defense. Lowry can still do that. He’s also a heady player who shouldn’t have any problem complimenting LeBron James.

We like the fit here. With that said, the Lakers may have their eyes on a bigger prize. This team is seen as a candidate to acquire a more impactful guard at this year’s deadline. Could another team use Lowry?
Houston Rockets
If Lowry goes to Philadelphia, he’ll be going home. If he goes to Houston, that will also be true in a sense. This is the team that Lowry broke out on as a starting-caliber player.
Now, the Rockets could use him again. Lowry may not surpass Aaron Holiday in their rotation – but he may. Either way, the Rockets would have a broader need to bring Lowry onto their roster.

He’s a consummate professional. The Rockets have made a jump in the Western Conference standings this year, but the most important players on this team are still young. Lowry’s mentorship could be invaluable. Meanwhile, reuniting him with Fred VanVleet could have some on-court benefits – even if Lowry is near the end of his career.
