Joel Embiid delivered an unforgettable performance by scoring a record-breaking 70 points, the highest in the NBA this season, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Embiid’s remarkable scoring included 24-41 field goals, 1-2 three-pointers, 21-23 free throws, and a personal best of 18 rebounds. This achievement surpassed Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers record of 68 points, set in 1967.

“I was actually mad at myself because I missed a lot of easy shots that I’ve been making all season,” Embiid said.

Despite his historic night, Embiid expressed some self-critique, noting missed opportunities on shots he usually makes. His feat mirrors Chamberlain’s legacy, which once scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors, a milestone in the history of the NBA.

“Obviously, Wilt accomplished a lot of things,” Embiid said. “To be in the same conversation is pretty cool. It was just a great night. Had it going. They just kept giving me the ball, and I just finished it.”

Embiid, a six-time All-Star and reigning MVP, has scored at least 30 points in 21 consecutive games, contributing to the 76ers’ six-game winning streak. During this impressive run, he emphasized teamwork and playing the right way to his teammates.

“The only thing I told my teammates was, ‘Please don’t force it,’” Embiid said. “Let’s just play basketball. We were just trying to play the right way.”

Victor Wembanyama, playing his first game against Embiid, scored 33 points and had seven rebounds for the Spurs. His performance, though overshadowed by Embiid’s, was still notable, especially in the context of the Spurs’ ongoing rebuilding efforts.

“It would have been more fun in a win, of course, but it’s inspiring, especially offensively,” Wembanyama said.

Embiid re-entered the game in the fourth quarter, with the 76ers leading comfortably and quickly becoming the focus of their offense, aiming to break the scoring record. 76ers coach Nick Nurse praised Embiid’s multifaceted scoring ability and motivation.

“The game was still pretty close,” Embiid said. “Felt like I needed to go back in. Once I got back in, I was like, ‘There’s my chance. Might as well go and do it.’”

Embiid also took a moment post-game to acknowledge former 76ers coach Brett Brown, now with the Spurs, recognizing his significant impact on Embiid’s career and the Philadelphia community.

“He’s done a lot not just for me but for the whole city of Philadelphia,” Embiid said. “I’m kind of glad I did it in front of him so he can kind of see the product of what he created.”

The matchup also highlighted the much-anticipated showdown between Embiid and Wembanyama, with fans eager to see the Spurs’ French rookie in action. While Wembanyama was impressed with his skills, it was Embiid’s night to showcase his dominance.

Embiid, impressed by Wembanyama’s potential, jokingly expressed hope that the latter would break records after his own retirement.

“He’s great, man,” Embiid said. “He’s got everything, size, skill, got everything. Bright future. He’s already pretty good. Once he develops, he’s going to be a lot of problems for a lot of guys in this league.”

The Spurs look forward to hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder, while the 76ers are set to face the Indiana Pacers in their upcoming games.
