The Cleveland Cavaliers continued their impressive run by securing their seventh consecutive win, defeating the Atlanta Hawks 116-95 during Saturday’s NBA action. Leading the charge for the Cavaliers was Donovan Mitchell, who had 18 points and eight assists.

The team’s collective effort was evident as seven players scored in double figures, including Jarrett Allen with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Sam Merrill contributing 18 points, Dean Wade with 17, and Georges Niang adding 14.

From the onset, the Cavaliers dominated, scoring the first 10 points and maintaining the lead throughout the game. This victory marked their third win over the Hawks this season. Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff highlighted the team’s defensive strategy as key, emphasizing the importance of setting the tone early in the game.

“If you come out and set the tone defensively, and let them know it is not going to be easy, you can put yourself in position where they are chasing you all night,” Bickerstaff said. “In the NBA, runs happen, but you’d rather be playing from in front than trying to play back into the game.”

The Cavaliers, facing the fourth-highest scoring team in the NBA, had a 15-4 advantage in the early stages and further extended their lead with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 34-25. Atlanta, struggling in third-quarter performance, couldn’t keep up.

“We have an intent and purpose to start basketball games. It is a complete buy-in to be elite defensively,” Bickerstaff said. “You are doing something special if you are containing a team like that in the first quarter.”

The Hawks, coming off a late return from a previous game and a three-game winning streak, faced challenges. Coach Quin Snyder acknowledged the team’s inconsistency. Trae Young, who was dealing with illness, left the game in the fourth quarter following an injury and did not return, contributing 15 points before his exit. Dejounte Murray led the Hawks with 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

“We’ve been mercurial. We’ve had moments we’ve found things that are successful in games and we’ve gotten away from them,” Snyder said. “We were a different team in the three games previous than we were tonight.”

Significantly, the Cavaliers have shown resilience, posting a 12-3 record in the absence of injured starters Darius Garland and Evan Mobley. The team was also without guard Caris LaVert against the Hawks.
