The needs for the New York Knicks ahead of the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline are clear. They need to upgrade their backcourt, finding someone capable of replacing the production Immanuel Quickley was giving them off the bench behind Jalen Brunson.

The Knicks’ new starting lineup of Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, OG Anunoby, Julius Randle and Isaiah Hartenstein has been the most productive five-man unit in the NBA since its inception. However, whenever Brunson comes off the court, the team’s production plummets.

In addition to an extra ball-handler, the Knicks could use some help in the frontcourt. Anunoby and Hartenstein aren’t going to last through the postseason playing 40+ minutes every night of the regular season.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Quentin Grimes, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks Updates

Luckily for New York, all of the areas of need they have should be available ahead of the deadline. To acquire that help, it sounds as if they are using Quentin Grimes as part of a trade package.

The Knicks are aware of him being disgruntled about his role with the team and are actively looking to move him ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline in three weeks. One team that is emerging as a potential suitor for Grimes is the Dallas Mavericks. Stefan Bondy of The New York Post shared the update, adding that the Atlanta Hawks would be a logical fit should they trade Dejounte Murray as well.

“A source said the Mavericks have expressed interest in Grimes. The [Atlanta] Hawks, who are positioned to be active before the trade deadline, would be a strong fit if they trade Dejounte Murray. There is no shortage of teams looking for plug-and-play 3-and-D wings,” Bondy wrote.

The Knicks, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, are combining Grimes with Evan Fournier and a first-round pick looking to make an upgrade to their rotation. The Hawks showed interest in Grimes when the teams engaged in Cam Reddish trade talks, but he was taken off the table.

In Dallas, Grimes would fit the mold of the kind of player the team is seeking. A 3-and-D wing is ideal around ball-dominant guards Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, as open 3-point shots are created regularly.

New York could address both of their needs in a deal with Dallas, sending Grimes, Fournier and a pick their way. In return, they could get back Tim Hardaway Jr. for a third stint with the team and Dwight Powell.
