Erik Spoelstra Signs Long-Term Extension With Heat

Erik Spoelstra has signed a long-term contract extension with the Miami Heat.

According to Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press, Spoelstra and the Heat agreed on an eight-year extension.

“Spoelstra and the team agreed on an eight-year extension, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement who spoke Tuesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms were not revealed publicly,” Reynolds wrote. “Spoelstra’s current deal expires after this season.”

Spoelstra is in his 16th season as head coach of the Heat. He started in the video room and worked his way up to the head coach spot in April 2008.

The Heat have won two championships under Spoelstra, who was named one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history. Miami won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were the leaders of those teams.

Spoelstra has won 725 games with the Heat. Miami made four straight NBA Finals in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, going 2-2. They beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012 and the San Antonio Spurs in 2013, with LeBron winning Finals MVP both times.

The Heat also made the Finals in 2020 and 2023, losing both times. Spoelstra is the NBA’s second longest-tenured current head coach behind Spurs legend Gregg Popovich, who is in his 28th season.

The Heat are 21-15 this season. They are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Spoelstra has once again done a great coaching job. All-Star Jimmy Butler has only appeared in 24 games and Miami is still one of the top teams in the NBA.
