Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry expressed his sympathy for teammate Chris Paul, who sustained a hand injury during their recent 113-109 victory against the Detroit Pistons. Curry acknowledged Paul’s dedication to preparation, highlighting the disappointment of such an injury due to a freak play.

“I don’t know how long he’ll be out, but I just feel for him personally because he does such an amazing job of taking care of his body, preparing himself day in, day out,” Curry said. “Nobody sees the hours he puts in, especially at this stage of his career, to be available.

“A freak play like that to sideline him, it’s tough,” Curry continued. “We’ll worry about the stuff with the team as it comes, but for him personally I just hope he keeps his spirits up and can get through this as quick as possible.”

Paul’s injury occurred in the third quarter as he collided with Pistons guard Jaden Ivey while reaching for a rebound. ESPN’s Kendra Andrews reported that Paul suffered a fractured hand and will undergo surgery the following week.

Acquired during the offseason in a trade involving the Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns, the 38-year-old Paul has been a significant addition to the Warriors. Despite his impressive career accolades, including 12 All-Star appearances, 11 All-NBA selections, and nine NBA All-Defensive Team honors, a championship title remains absent from his resume.

Joining a Warriors team renowned for its championship success, led by Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, Paul has found a different role, primarily coming off the bench. His season averages of 9.0 points, 7.3 assists, and 3.7 rebounds are lower than his usual career standards.

The Warriors’ win brings their season record to 17-18, placing them 10th in the Western Conference. Paul’s injury might lead to increased playing time for younger players amid discussions around head coach Steve Kerr’s minute allocations.

Recent reports by Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic highlighted the frustration of young forward Jonathan Kuminga with Kerr’s coaching decisions. Kerr later acknowledged the need to give Kuminga more playtime, considering the complexities of game dynamics and player combinations.

“I’ve got to get him out there for longer, but these are really difficult decisions,” Kerr said. “Because it’s not just as simple as how many minutes a guy plays. It’s who’s playing, what’s the combination, what’s happening in the game.”

Curry commented on the team’s challenges, emphasizing the importance of readiness and adaptability in dealing with injuries and changing line-ups.

“There’s a lot of narratives around our team and who’s supposed to play and our depth and the amount of guys you can argue should be in the rotation,” Curry said. “It’s just hard, a coach has a difficult job with that front.

“If you look at any team in the NBA, injuries when they pop up, you have to have that next-man-up mentality,” Curry continued. “That’s the challenge for us now, more combinations that we probably haven’t seen. We have to be able to take it in stride and execute and do what we need to do to stay and competitive and win games, but everybody’s gonna have an opportunity, so gotta stay ready.”

With Paul being a key player in terms of minutes, his absence opens opportunities for other players like Kuminga, Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and others to step up. Draymond Green’s expected return from suspension will add to the team’s playmaking options.

While a specific timeline for Paul’s return is uncertain, reports suggest he is expected to rejoin the team later this season.
