It takes two sides to make an NBA trade. A team may be interested in upgrading their roster. That doesn’t mean that they’ll be able to do so. If they don’t have the assets, they may be unable to move.

Take the Boston Celtics. It’s been widely suggested that they’ll look to make a move at this year’s deadline. Fair enough. The Celtics are contenders – why wouldn’t they want to improve their team?

With that said, they aren’t exactly rich with assets. Moreover, all major contracts on Boston’s books belong to indispensable players. If the Celtics are going to improve their roster, they’ll need to find an affordable target.

How about Andre Drummond of the Chicago Bulls?

NBA Trade Proposal: Boston Celtics Land Chicago Bulls’ Andre Drummond

Chicago Bulls Receive: G/F Delano Banton, 2024 Second-Round Pick (DAL via BOS), 2024 Second-Round Pick (CHI or NOP via BOS), 2027 Second-Round Pick (ATL via BOS)

Boston Celtics Receive: C Andre Drummond

It may be difficult for the Celtics to make a blockbuster trade. Luckily for them, they don’t necessarily need to make one. Boston is one of the best teams in the NBA.

The Bulls aren’t so lucky. It sounds like it’s going to be difficult for them to make a major trade as well. Zach LaVine’s trade value is allegedly non-existent. DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic won’t fetch them a fortune, and it’s been reported that the Bulls aren’t dying to move Alex Caruso.

Yet, the Bulls need to make a trade. This team is stuck in mediocrity. They should be sellers at the deadline – if they can find a buyer. Should they start by sending Drummond to Boston?

Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal

This doesn’t begin to scratch the surface for Chicago. We understand that. Still, even if they can’t fully launch a rebuild, getting the most that they can for Drummond makes sense.

In all likelihood, they won’t get a first-round pick. Drummond is a productive player, but that’s not his market value. A trio of second-rounders ought to satisfy this front office.

Meanwhile, taking a flyer on Banton makes sense too. He’s a high-ceiling, low-floor young player. Still, his combination of size and passing ability make him an intriguing prospect. Should the Celtics part with him?

Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal

Arguably, the Celtics already made their blockbuster move. This summer, they acquired Jrue Holiday. As part of that transaction, they had to part with Robert Williams III.

It was a good trade. Still, the Celtics are missing Williams III. This team’s big men are talented, but they aren’t dominant rebounders or rim protectors. They could use a more traditional big man in their rotation.

Drummond isn’t an elite rim protector – the Celtics can’t afford one of those. Still, he remains one of the best rebounders in the NBA. For that matter, he may be the best player that the Celtics can afford.
