Magic To Retire Shaquille O’Neal’s Jersey

The Orlando Magic will retire NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal’s No. 32 jersey on February 13.

The Magic drafted O’Neal with the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft out of LSU. Orlando, celebrating its 35th anniversary as a franchise this season, will make O’Neal the team’s first retired number. 

In 295 games with the Magic, O’Neal averaged 27.2 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.8 steals and 2.8 blocks. He made four All-Star teams and won the 1992-93 Rookie of the Year Award.

O’Neal is the Magic’s all-time leader in blocks per game, player efficiency rating and win shares per 48 minutes. He’s also fourth in field goals, fourth in defensive rebounds, third in offensive rebounds, third in total rebounds, second in blocks, sixth in points, second in points per game and second in rebounds per game.

In the summer of 1996, O’Neal left the Magic for the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent. Shaq won three championships, three Finals MVPs and one regular-season MVP with the Lakers before getting traded to the Miami Heat in July 2004.

O’Neal won one title with the Heat. The 15-time All-Star finished his legendary career with averages of 23.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.6 steals and 2.3 blocks with the Magic, Lakers, Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics.

O’Neal was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. He is universally recognized as the most dominant player in NBA history.

O’Neal will become the second player in NBA history to have his jersey retired by three different franchises, joining Wilt Chamberlain. O’Neal’s No. 34 jersey was retired by the Lakers in 2013 and his No. 32 jersey was retired by the Heat in 2016.
