You’ve got to give up something good to get something good. That’s a principle that applies in the NBA as well. When a team makes a trade, they’ll have to part with something – or someone – valuable to get a valuable return.
Recently, the New York Knicks made a major trade. They received the highly valuable O.G Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors. This deal should make the Knicks a better team. Still, they did have to give up value for Anunoby.
They may not miss RJ Barrett. Anuboby plays the same position, and he’s more impactful. With that said, the Knicks could miss Immanuel Quickley’s scoring punch with the second unit.
Could they acquire Collin Sexton of the Utah Jazz to replace him?

Utah Jazz Receive: G/F Evan Fournier, 2024 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – NYK)
New York Knicks Receive: G Collin Sexton
That said, the goal is to receive more than you give up. The Jazz’s general manager knows this all too well. After all, Danny Ainge has earned the nickname Trader Danny throughout his NBA career.
This is the architect of the last Boston Celtics championship. He’s also, in a sense, the man who assembled the current Celtics. Ainge made a groundbreaking deal with the Brooklyn Nets to land the draft picks that would become Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Collin Sexton, Utah Jazz, New York Knicks Updates
It will be interesting to see what Ainge does with the Jazz. Last summer, he accumulated assets by trading Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert.
Should he continue accumulating assets?
Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
When we talk about assets, we’re mostly referring to first round picks. Eventually, those picks become players. When that happens, the next step is to decide who to keep.
Keyonte George looks like a keeper. The Jazz’s rookie guard has flashed immense potential in 2023-24. With that in mind, there’s some incentive to move Sexton. What should the Jazz want in return for him?

More than anything, draft capital. Here, they’re picking up a protected pick that’s nearly certain to convey. Throw in an expiring contract, and this is a good deal for Utah.
Should the Knicks make it?
Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
The Jazz are likely to pick George over Sexton. He’s younger, and he’s on a rookie contract. Still, don’t make the mistake of selling Sexton short.
His per minute production has been impressive this year. Sexton can score in bunches, and he’s a solid defender who plays with effort. In other words, he’s a perfect replacement for Quickley.

If the Knicks hesitate here, it’s because they’re after a bigger fish. Still, they’d have the assets to make another major trade this summer even after landing Sexton. They should be happy to give up a protected first for him – after all, they’re getting someone valuable in this deal.
