The New York Knicks will “always” have trade interest in Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

However, the Knicks and Timberwolves have not come close to making a Towns trade.

Knicks senior vice president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas worked with Towns from 2019 to 2021 when the two were with the Timberwolves. Towns is a client of CAA, where Knicks president Leon Rose once ran the basketball division. New York executive vice president of basketball operations William Wesley followed Rose from CAA to the Knicks as well.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks Updates

The Knicks believe they have the assets to make another blockbuster trade after acquiring OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors. However, the odds of the Timberwolves trading Towns are low since they have the best record in the West.

Towns, 28, is averaging 21.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists this season while shooting 50.9% from the field, 41.3% from beyond the arc and 89.5% from the free-throw line. The three-time All-Star has 15 double-doubles.

The Knicks checked in on Towns earlier this season, but they never made an offer for the big man, according to NBA insider Fred Katz of The Athletic. Katz reported that New York has not made a serious run at Towns in recent years.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks Updates

If the Timberwolves don’t go on a deep playoff run this season, maybe the front office will entertain a Towns trade in the offseason. For now, though, it looks like Minnesota is building around Towns, Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert, while New York is building around Anunoby, Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.
