Gordon Hayward Gets Brutally Honest About Why 2018-19 Celtics Didn’t Win Title

Charlotte Hornets forward Gordon Hayward was a guest on Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George’s podcast, “Podcast P with Paul George,” and the Butler product talked about why the 2018-19 Boston Celtics didn’t win the championship.

The 2018-19 Celtics had Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Boston went 49-33 in the regular season but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 2019 playoffs in five games.

The Celtics had many team meetings during the 2018-19 season. During a game against the Miami Heat in Miami, Brown and Marcus Smart got into a shouting match on the bench. There was a lot of tension on that team, but the Celtics still managed to secure the fourth seed in the East.

Boston swept the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2019 playoffs. It looked like the Celtics were primed to reach the NBA Finals. However, the Bucks beat the Celtics in the second round despite losing Game 1.

In the summer of 2019, Irving left the Celtics for the Brooklyn Nets in free agency. The guard became public enemy number one in Boston since he told fans before the 2018-19 season started that he would re-sign with the Celtics.

Hayward left Boston in 2020 and joined the Hornets. Meanwhile, Tatum and Brown are now one of the best duos in the NBA. The All-Star forwards led the Celtics to the 2022 NBA Finals, where the Golden State Warriors won in six games. Overall, the Celtics have reached four conference finals and one NBA finals in the Tatum-Brown era.
