Ja Morant, a two-time All-Star, opened up on Friday about the challenges he has faced during his 25-game suspension imposed by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Morant described the period as difficult, filled with “some horrible days,” as he has had to step away from basketball and focus on personal development.

“It’s been tough, a lot of learning, a lot of teaching,” Morant said, “I can’t regret it because, in the end, it made me better.”

Despite the suspension, Morant has been maintaining his connection with the team. He was seen at a Friday morning shootaround, interacting light-heartedly with his teammates. The terms of his suspension allow him to practice and travel with the Grizzlies and participate in morning shootarounds. Still, he cannot be present at the arena during games, making his closest interaction social media posts.

Morant emphasized that simply talking about being a better leader for the Memphis Grizzlies is not sufficient. He believes that his actions, rather than words, are what will truly demonstrate his commitment to change.

“I can’t, you know, make nobody believe me outside of my actions,” Morant said. “So me answering this question with just words probably won’t mean nothing to nobody.”

Basketball, a therapeutic outlet for Morant throughout his life, was notably absent during this period, making his journey more challenging. He expressed gratitude for the support he received from his family, the Grizzlies, and through therapy, which have been instrumental since the suspension was handed down in mid-June. This was Morant’s second suspension within four months.

“I made a lot of mistakes, not some that’s even been public, with my family,” Morant said.

The suspension followed an incident shortly after the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the Grizzlies from the playoffs in April, where Morant, during a live-stream video, was seen with a handgun while singing with friends in a vehicle. Commissioner Silver responded with the suspension and outlined additional steps for Morant.

Morant eagerly anticipates his return, counting down the days until he can make his season debut on Tuesday night in New Orleans.
