The New York Knicks tried to acquire OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors last winter, according to NBA insider Fred Katz of The Athletic.

However, the Raptors never engaged in serious discussions to trade away Anunoby, who is one of the best two-way players in the NBA.

Anunoby is expected to decline his player option for next season and enter unrestricted free agency after this season. The Raptors are concerned about potential teams who could give Anunoby a shorter-term max contract due to the weak free agent market next offseason, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

“Toronto is concerned about potential teams who could give Anunoby a shorter-term max contract due to the weak free agent market, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote. “As outlined on The HoopsHype Podcast, the Philadelphia 76ers are one of the potential teams who could give Anunoby a max contract this summer.”

Anunoby is averaging 14.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists this season while shooting 46.0% from the field, 38.8% from beyond the arc and 66.7% from the free-throw line. He won the 2019 championship with the Raptors and has made one All-NBA Defensive team and won one steals title.

Anunoby is looking for greater ball-handling opportunities that can result in a commensurate salary increase, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, and that may not be available to him in Toronto since the Raptors are building around Scottie Barnes.
