Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told Rachel Nichols that he tried to trade for Stephen Curry on draft night back in 2009 when he was the general manager of the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns had the 14th pick in the 2009 draft. Kerr wanted to trade up to draft Curry, but a deal wasn’t reached and the Warriors drafted Curry with the seventh pick.

Kerr was disappointed he wasn’t able to draft Curry. However, the two connected in 2014 when the Warriors hired Kerr as their head coach.

Curry and Kerr have guided the Warriors to six NBA Finals and four championships. Curry has won two MVPs and one Finals MVP under Kerr. The Warriors also won an NBA record 73 games during the 2015-16 regular season.

Kerr was named one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history, while Curry made the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. Both men will be in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame one day.

Curry is averaging 27.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.2 blocks since Kerr became his head coach. The Warriors superstar is the greatest shooter in NBA history, as he passed Ray Allen on the NBA’s all-time 3-point field goals list.

When it’s all said and done, Curry and Kerr will go down as one of the best coach-player duos in NBA history. Kerr was a fan of Curry’s before anyone was back in 2009.
