Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II has suffered a torn right calf and will be sidelined indefinitely, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Payton II, who won the 2022 championship with the Warriors, suffered the injury on November 28 against the Sacramento Kings.

This is a huge loss for the Warriors, who are only 8-10 on the season. Payton II is one of the best defenders in the NBA. He’s also carved out a nice niche on offense with the Warriors.

The Warriors blew a 24-point lead to the Kings. Payton II finished with seven points, five rebounds and two steals before getting hurt. The Warriors became the first team since 2014 to commit at least 20 turnovers and allow 40 or more free throws in the same game.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Gary Payton II, Golden State Warriors Updates

“In my experience in this league, you have one gut-punch loss a year where you go into the locker room and cannot believe you just lost the game,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told NBA reporters. “Last year we had one of those in Utah. This one felt like that. … We’re not in a free fall. It’s the early part of the season. We’re losing a bunch of close games. You can see it on tape every game. Fouling and turnovers. I can only say it so many times. Those two things have to improve. When they do, we’ll be really good.”

The Warriors are back in action on November 30 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Their NBA dynasty is likely over.
