According to Kendra Andrews of ESPN, Klay Thompson’s contract negotiations with the Golden State Warriors are weighing on him.
Thompson is in the final year of his contract and the Warriors have not signed him to an extension yet. The four-time champion is having the worst shooting season of his career in 2023-24.
“But Thompson’s slump to start this season feels different,” Andrews wrote. “His contract negotiations are weighing on him, sources told ESPN, and he appears to be noticeably more frustrated during games. He sometimes sits on the end of the bench by himself during timeouts, or slaps his head after taking a bad shot. At the end of the first half of Friday’s win over against the San Antonio Spurs, Thompson threw his towel in frustration after picking up his second personal foul and then exited the court to the locker room before the half finished.”

Thompson is averaging 15.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists for the Warriors while shooting 40.2% from the field, 36.7% from beyond the arc and 87.5% from the free-throw line. He has scored 20 points only two times.
The Warriors are 8-9 on the season. For the team to win another championship, Thompson has to find his shooting touch. The five-time All-Star is too good of a shooter to be shooting only 36.7% from 3-point land.

“But thank Steve (Kerr), I guess, I don’t know,” Thompson said. “Sometimes you earn these things, like patience and time to find yourself. I think history is on our side when it comes to that stuff.”
