One NBA writer is proposing that the San Antonio Spurs acquire Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks.
Fran Leiva of Fadeaway World proposed the following trade idea between the Spurs and Hawks:
San Antonio Spurs receive: Trae Young
Atlanta Hawks receive: Jeremy Sochan, Tre Jones, 2025 first-round pick, 2027 first-round pick, 2025 second-round pick (via Pelicans), 2026 second-round pick
The Spurs are in desperate need of a traditional floor general who can set up rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama with easy baskets. Young is not only one of the top passers in the NBA, but he’s also an elite scorer.
Young is averaging 26.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 10.4 assists this season while shooting 40.2% from the field, 36.5% from beyond the arc and 87.7% from the free-throw line. The Spurs need a true point guard who can break down defenses and find open players beyond the arc and under the basket and Young fits that bill.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs Updates
A two-time All-Star, Young has career averages of 25.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 9.4 assists. The Oklahoma product signed a five-year, $215.2 million extension with the Hawks in August 2021. He’s making $40.1 million this season.
Young was ninth in the NBA in total points, 10th in points per game, first in total assists and second in assists per game last season. The Spurs could start Young, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Wembanyama and Zach Collins if San Antonio’s front office figured out a way to acquire Young from Atlanta.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs Updates
The Spurs have the worst record in the Western Conference. They are only 3-14. Making a blockbuster trade for Young would be a huge spark for the franchise. Young and Wembanyama would certainly need time to become familiar with each other, but they would have the potential to become one of the best duos in the NBA.
