Every team in the NBA is at some place in the rebuilding cycle. For teams at the onset of the cycle, the present is rough. Still, the future may be bright.

It’s not difficult to get excited about a young player or two with some potential. With that in mind, fans of the Portland Trail Blazers have plenty to get excited about.

Between Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Anfernee Simons, and Deandre Ayton, this team has an extremely talented young core. The Blazers aren’t built to win now, but they’re a team to keep an eye on in the future.

Realistically, the Chicago Bulls would be happy to trade places with them. This team is expected to undergo its own rebuild soon. Could they send Patrick Williams to the Blazers in the process?

The rebuilding cycle is consistent. A team tries to contend. If they win a title, they’re likely to hang onto their core. If they continuously fail to accomplish that goal, they’re more likely to start moving veterans.

That doesn’t mean that the cycle is predictable. It isn’t. Look at the Bulls. When they selected Patrick Williams with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 draft, they felt like a future-focused team.

Then, their front office made a flurry of moves. Suddenly, the Bulls were in win-now mode. Unfortunately, they haven’t been winning much.

Meanwhile, there’s been more disappointment – Williams has fallen short of expectations. Perhaps he’d benefit from a fresh start. Should the Blazers give him one?

Some Blazers fans will have questions for us. This team just started rebuilding. Why are they already moving off of a first-round pick?

Did the Blazers just start rebuilding, though? If so, how do they have two recent lottery picks on their roster? Portland has been outside of the playoff picture for two years.

As a result, they’ve got a head start on their rebuild. Anfernee Simons’ unexpected development supports that claim, and now, they’ve got Ayton in the middle.

What is Portland missing? A young 3-and-D wing. Williams fits the bill. He’s having a down year, but if he can return to his previous form, he’ll be a great addition to this roster.

Should the Bulls really part with a young player at the onset of a rebuild?

Bulls fans may similarly question our logic. if they’re rebuilding, why move Williams? Well, he’s certainly off to a rough start this year. He may improve – but he may not. If Chicago doesn’t move him soon, they may risk watching his value further decline.

Moreover, there’s something to be said for a fresh start. The Bulls need assets. This pick may be lottery-protected, but it’s still an asset. If the Bulls are rebuilding, they should be happy to add it.

Besides, Williams III is young enough to be part of a rebuild, too. He’s among the most injury-prone players in the NBA, but if he can get his body right, he could be part of the next great Bulls teams. After all, their rebuilding cycle will eventually end as well.
