Anthony Davis Claims Lakers Are Motivated To Win In-Season Tournament Because Of Prize Money

The Los Angeles Lakers are 2-0 in in-season tournament games. They have beaten the Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies. After the Lakers defeated the Grizzlies, Anthony Davis revealed that Los Angeles is motivated to win the in-season tournament because of the prize money.

The players on the team that wins the NBA Cup will each get $500,000 in prize money. Even though Davis is making $40.6 million this season from the Lakers, he wants more.

The 30-year-old Davis is averaging 23.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 0.7 steals and 3.3 blocks this season while shooting 53.5% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc and 88.4% from the free-throw line. The eight-time All-Star leads the NBA in blocks per game and total blocks.

The Lakers have two games left in group play of the in-season tournament. They face the Portland Trail Blazers on November 17 and the Utah Jazz on November 21.

Davis signed a three-year, $186 million extension with the Lakers this past offseason. The Chicago native is committed to Los Angeles for five more years and approximately $270.5 million. Davis’ extension, which kicks in for the 2025-26 season, is the richest extension in NBA history with a projected average annual value of $62 million.

Davis and LeBron James have the same agent (Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group). LeBron can become an unrestricted free agent after this season if he declines his 2024-25 player option.

Davis and LeBron guided the Lakers to the 2020 championship. It will be interesting to see how far Los Angeles goes this season.
