Fans around the NBA may have underestimated the Dallas Mavericks. They’ve looked like one of the best teams in the NBA this summer. Why were they so generally overlooked?
Well, this roster looked shallow. Who was the third option behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving? Tim Hardaway Jr. didn’t feel like a viable option.
Meanwhile, their big man rotation felt light. Could the Mavericks really rely on a rookie like Derrick Lively III? At this point, the Mavericks look like they’ve answered those questions.
Hardaway Jr. is thriving as a third option, and Lively III is ready to contribute. On the other hand, Dallas could still stand to flesh out this roster for a playoff run.
Here are three deals that we think they ought to look at.
Trade No. 1 – Dallas Mavericks Land Brooklyn Nets’ Dorian Finney-Smith
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Dorian Finney-Smith
Brooklyn Nets Receive: C Richaun Holmes, 2027 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – DAL)
The Dallas Mavericks traded Dorian Finney-Smith to the Brooklyn Nets at last year’s trade deadline. That doesn’t mean that they didn’t value Finney-Smith.
Simply put, the Mavericks had a higher priority. They needed a co-star for Doncic – flipping Finney-Smith for Irving was the right decision.
Could the Mavericks get Finney-Smith back? The Nets have been underwhelming to start the season. They also have a surplus of 3-and-D wings. This team may prioritize assets over hanging onto Finney-Smith. Meanwhile, Dallas could use another 3-and-D wing in their rotation.

So, Finney-Smith would be a sensible addition. With that said, the Mavericks could justify prioritizing floor spacing over defense. After Hardaway Jr., this team is light on movement shooting.
Here’s a deal that changes that.
Trade No. 2 – Dallas Mavericks Land Indiana Pacers’ Buddy Hield
Dallas Mavericks Receive: G/F Buddy Hield, F Jordan Nwora
Indiana Pacers Receive: C Richaun Holmes, F/C Maxi Kleber, F Olivier-Maxence Prosper
Buddy Hield is certainly a trade target. He’s on an expiring deal, and it’s been reported that the Indiana Pacers aren’t sure if they want to extend him.
As one of the best shooters in the NBA, he’ll garner interest from any team with contending aspirations. He won’t cost a fortune, either.
After all, he’s on an expiring deal. Hield might be a one-year rental. With that in mind, the Pacers should be happy to land an intriguing young player like Maxence-Prosper for him.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks may be willing to give up a rookie that they’re not using in exchange for a one-year rental. Nwora would upgrade their spacing as well. At the same time, Dallas could be interested in making a bigger push for a more significant player.
Here’s a deal that has them doing that.
Trade No. 3 – Dallas Mavericks Land Toronto Raptors’ Pascal Siakam
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F/C Pascal Siakam
Toronto Raptors Receive: C Richaun Holmes, F/C Maxi Kleber, G/F Josh Green, F Olivier-Maxence Prosper, G Jaden Hardy, 2026 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2027 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2030 First-Round Pick (DAL)
The Dallas Mavericks are a bit light on assets. If they want to acquire another star, they must sell the farm. That’s what they’re doing here.
The Mavericks are sending out anything that isn’t nailed down in exchange for Pascal Siakam. For the Toronto Raptors, this would be a risky move. If the Mavericks fall apart in the next few years, it could pay tremendous dividends.
If even two of those swaps convey, this is a fair return. Otherwise, they may take a bad deal for Siakam in hindsight.

At the same time, they’re landing some quality young talent. Dallas should be happy to give that talent up. If they add Siakam, nobody will be able to underestimate them again.
