The Golden State Warriors shocked many NBA fans when they acquired Chris Paul this offseason, effectively giving themselves the best backup point guard in the league. With their latest win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Warriors moved to 5-1 on the season. They are currently tied for first place in the Western Conference with the defending champion Denver Nuggets.

Despite Golden State’s strong record, the team needs Stephen Curry’s newest backup to fix a huge problem. CP3 is shooting a shocking 1-for-21 from three this season. At 38 years old, Paul’s age could be catching up to his three ball, but this slump is quite extreme.

Through six outings, the legendary floor general has dropped 9.0 dimes per game to go with 8.0 points a night. Largely due to his 4.8% clip from downtown, Paul has only hit 33.9% of his field goal attempts. Even so, CP3 leads the Warriors in total plus-minus this season at +57.

Despite coming off the bench in four of six contests, Paul has averaged 29.3 minutes. If the veteran can get his shot right, his impact on the Warriors should grow even more.

Paul shot 37.5% from distance last season, and he is a career 36.8% shooter from beyond the arc. Needless to say, his current shooting slump should not last very long. However, Paul is aware that his individual struggles don’t have to equate to losing basketball.

After his team’s epic 141-139 win over OKC, Paul addressed the fortunate nature of his current situation in his postgame presser.

“It’s crazy to think about,” Paul said. “I can score one point or two points, and we still win the game … It’s a nice luxury to have.”

With Draymond Green back from injury, Paul should continue to come off the bench for the 2022 champs. His next chance to bounce back from his long-distance woes will come in a road matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 5.
