The Philadelphia 76ers didn’t sign Tyrese Maxey to a rookie-scale extension, so the talented guard will become a restricted NBA free agent next offseason.

The Sixers will re-sign Maxey once free agency starts next summer, and according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Philadelphia believes it will have to pay Maxey max money.

“The 76ers are preparing for Tyrese Maxey to be a max player in the summer of 2024 in free agency, I’m told,” Scotto said on his podcast. “I think he could certainly grow into that. He’s a rising star and a potential All-Star-caliber player, whether it’s this year or in the years to come.”

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers Updates

Maxey is averaging 27.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists through four games this season. He’s the No. 2 option on offense for the Sixers behind Joel Embiid now that James Harden is no longer on the team. Philadelphia traded Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers for Robert Covington, Marcus Morris, Nicolas Batum and Kenyon Martin Jr.

During an interview with Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports before the 2023-24 season started, Maxey talked about his contract status with the Sixers

“It can be tough. It can be, you know, when you have expectations. But you’re not obligated to anything. I understand it’s the business aspect of it,” Maxey said. “I just look at it as I’m gonna go out there and still play. I’m still on the 76ers. I love it here and I want to help us win. And at the end of the day, that’s my contract and that’s what I’ll fulfill. I love Philly. And we’ll see what happens.”
