Scott Perry, Knicks, NBA

Scott Perry spent decades in the NBA as a member of different front offices around the league. Most recently, he was the general manager of the New York Knicks, taking over in 2017 following the disastrous tenure of Phil Jackson leading the team’s front office.

Perry remained in that role through the 2022-23 season. His contract expired at that point and the Knicks opted to not bring him back, ending his tenure with the franchise after six seasons. The beginning of his tenure was a dark time for the franchise, as they were in the midst of what ended up being a seven-season run without sniffing a playoff appearance.

But, the longer he was with the franchise, the more respectable they became. The Knicks made the postseason in two out of his last three seasons with the franchise, helping Leon Rose oversee an impressive turnaround.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Scott Perry, Mitchell Robinson, New York Knicks Updates

New York went from one of the least desirable situations in the NBA to one of the more attractive ones. They are flush with assets, possessing draft capital and tradeable contracts. The Knicks are in a position to make a blockbuster trade should the opportunity present itself and he was one of the architects behind that plan.

Recently, Perry appeared on The Hoop Genius Podcast and talked about several different topics. One of the topics was current Knicks center Mitchell Robinson. In Perry’s opinion, Robinson is the player he is most proud of in his 23-year career as an executive in the NBA.

“He is the player that I may be most proud of in my 23-year career, understanding where he came from—Mitchell wouldn’t say 2 words when we first got him…To see that growth, starting center last 5 years…great story,” Perry said.

The transformation for Robinson has been a pleasure to watch for fans as well. Early on in his career, he was a foul-prone center oozing with potential based on his athleticism. Now the longest-tenured Knick heading into Year 6 of his career, that potential is showing through.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Scott Perry, Mitchell Robinson, New York Knicks Updates

Robinson is one of the most dominant paint presences in the NBA. He is an offensive rebounding maestro, continually keeping possessions alive for the Knicks. Defensively he has come a long way, as he now understands the nuances of the game.

His impact is felt on a nightly basis as he has learned how to not commit fouls, which would lead to long stints on the bench. The shot-blocking prowess he possesses, whether it is at the rim or on the perimeter, has produced many highlights over the years.

It is easy to see what would make Perry so proud of Robinson. Given where he started from and where he has gotten to this point, it is hard to be anything but excited. If he sticks with the Knicks, Robinson has a chance to re-write some of their record books as he continues to develop his game.
