The Boston Celtics were involved in two of the bigger trades of the NBA offseason. They acquired Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards early on and Jrue Holiday from the Portland Trail Blazers after the Damian Lillard blockbuster. Could they benefit from the fallout of another blockbuster trade?

Earlier this week, the Philadelphia 76ers finally ended the James Harden saga. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, along with P.J. Tucker, in exchange for Marcus Morris Sr., Nic Batum, Robert Covington, Kenyon Martin Jr., multiple draft picks and a pick swap.

To make room for all of those players, the 76ers had to make some changes to their roster. One of those changes was to release veteran shooting guard Danny Green. Per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, he was waived to make room on the roster.

While Green isn’t the same player he was earlier in his career, he is still someone who can help a contending team. He is an excellent 3-point shooter who can hold his own on the defensive side of the ball.

A two-time NBA Champion, Green is likely to find his way onto the roster of a contender sooner than later. He can wait to see if an opportunity at playing time arises somewhere around the league, but one NBA analyst believes that the Celtics could be an ideal landing spot for him. Bobby Kritvitzky of Sports Illustrated floated the idea of Green landing in Beantown.

“The two contests he participated in to start the 2023-24 campaign, averaging nine minutes, is a small sample size, but he was moving well and looks recovered from his injury.

“While the 36-year-old’s no longer at the level he was while with the Toronto Raptors, when he was one of the NBA’s more valuable 3&D role players, if last season, when Green drilled 43.2 percent of his 3.4 three-point attempts, is any indication, he’s still effective from beyond the arc,” Krivitsky wrote. “Boston wanted to remain patient and evaluate its roster in-season before making any moves. But an opportunity to add a three-time champion who could do well in a limited role is worth making.”

The Celtics do have one open roster spot that can be used on Green. However, it is common for contending teams to leave a spot open, giving them flexibility during the season. Whether it be making a trade or biding their time to see who becomes available on the buyout market later in the season, teams like to have some maneuverability.

If they do opt to fill the spot sooner than later, Green is an ideal candidate. He brings championship experience to the roster and would provide them with more depth on the wing, where they are a bit shorthanded behind Jaylen Brown and Derrick White.
