The Philadelphia 76ers finally ended the James Harden trade drama by sending The Beard to the Los Angeles Clippers for Marcus Morris, Robert Covington, Nicolas Batum, KJ Martin, two first-round draft picks, two second-round draft picks and a pick swap in 2029, according to multiple NBA reports. The Sixers are now left with two stars, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, but they reportedly have plans to go “star hunting” next offseason, according to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The Sixers project to have $55.7 million in cap space available next offseason. The team also has seven first-round draft picks from 2024 to 2029 that they can package in a deal with the return from the Harden trade.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: James Harden, Los Angeles Clippers, Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers Updates
The Clippers’ unprotected pick in 2028 could be extremely valuable. Harden will become a free agent after this season and Kawhi Leonard and Paul George could become free agents if they turn down their player options for 2024-25.
The Sixers have been linked to Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine and Toronto Raptors forward OG Anunoby as trade targets. If Philadelphia doesn’t make another trade this season, president Daryl Morey could look to trade for a star or sign someone big in free agency next offseason. Bulls star DeMar DeRozan will become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he doesn’t sign an extension this year.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: James Harden, Los Angeles Clippers, Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers Updates
The Sixers are 2-1 on the young season. While Embiid and Maxey are great players, Philadelphia will need another elite player to compete for a title and it appears Morey knows that.
