San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama has taken the NBA and basketball world by storm. His one-of-one blend of size, skill and athleticism makes him a draw that even non-basketball fans are intrigued by.

Through his first three games as an NBA player, he has already experienced some highs and lows. The most important thing for a young player to learn is that not every night is going to be your night.

Wembanyama had a solid performance against the Houston Rockets over the weekend, helping the Spurs to a 126-122 overtime victory. He scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds with one assist, three blocks and three steals.

However, he learned just how hard life can be in the NBA in Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers. A title contender when healthy, the Clippers made Wembanyama uncomfortable all night, giving him a true welcome to the NBA moment.

It was one that the talented rookie took in stride, as these are all learning experiences for him. Still only a teenager, going up against grown men night in and night out will certainly humble you at times, but provide you with experiences to grow as a player.

“It’s not about how bad the struggles are going to be, but how persistent we’re going to be,” Victor Wembanyama mused after committing five of the team’s season-worst 25 turnovers. “I wouldn’t see any reason to be frustrated three games into the season, but it is a learning experience.”

Against the Clippers, Wembanyama scored 11 points, shooting 4-of-10 from the field, missing both of his 3-point attempts. He had only five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block to go along with the five turnovers.

Turnovers have been an issue for the French phenom in the early going as he has committed at least four in each of his first three NBA games. That will be something head coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs coaching staff will be working on as he continues to develop as a player.

Based on his quote above, Wembanyama is a willing learner. He wants to get better and is willing to put in the work, taking all of the lumps that will come along with the journey.
