Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic put up 33 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists versus the San Antonio Spurs on opening night, becoming just the third player in NBA history with a 30-point triple-double in a season opener.
The Mavericks defeated the Spurs by a final score of 126-119. Doncic shot 13-of-25 from the field, 3-of-11 from beyond the arc and 4-of-7 from the free-throw line in 34 minutes of action. Dallas spoiled Victor Wembanyama’s NBA debut in front of a raucous Spurs crowd.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks Updates
“It was fun,” Doncic said. “We knew the whole building was going to be loud. He’s probably one of the best prospects to enter the NBA. It was fun. For me, personally, I love challenges. So, that was a fun challenge.”
Despite having Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks didn’t even qualify for the play-in tournament last season. Doncic and Irving are under a lot of pressure to gel this season and lead Dallas back to the postseason.
Doncic averaged 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.0 assists last season. The Mavericks star was asked to talk about Wembanyama during his postgame press conference and he showered the youngster with praise.
“He has obviously the size, obviously like everybody talks, but the way he moves for 7-5, 7-6 — I don’t know what it is, sorry — but he moves incredible,” Doncic said. “He moves like a point guard almost. So it’s pretty amazing to see him. He’s going to have a great future, and it’s going to be amazing to watch.”
