The Dallas Mavericks open up the season against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs. However, they might be without their star player Luka Doncic. The Mavericks reveal a major update on the injury status ahead of their first game of the NBA season.

Doncic sustained a calf injury in practice during the pre-season. Although he played in most of the games, he was given limited minutes. On Tuesday, Doncic commented on his status for the game against the Spurs. “I’ve been practicing for two days, so I feel pretty good. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow morning.”

When asked to describe his ailing thigh injury, Doncic said, “Yeah, it’s off and on. It’s a weird thing.” I don’t really know how to explain it. It’s something weird. It’s better than it was, for sure.” The Mavericks will be monitoring the injuries and are listing their star player as questionable.

However, Doncic did also mention that he felt better than he did during the international trip. Doncic averaged 32.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.0 assists last year. He only missed 15 games.

Doncic hasn’t missed many games throughout his career and has stayed relatively healthy. The most time he has missed was back in 2019-2020 when he was out for 21 games total.

The Mavericks are hoping to come out stronger this season after a disappointing end to last season. They have paired Doncic with Kyrie Irving to give them another scoring punch. The last couple of experiments with Kristaps Porzingis and Christian Wood did not work out as planned.

Also, losing out on Jalen Brunson after their run a few years back to reach the Western Conference finals has hurt their offensive output at guard. The hope is that this year will be different and it will take Doncic staying healthy in order to have a chance.
