When an NBA team has a star player, they typically look for another. When they’ve got two stars, they’re typically looking to compete for an NBA title. If your team has two star players in their prime, they’re either contending or wasting time.
Are the Dallas Mavericks contending? That’s a difficult question. The Mavericks have two stars. Luka Doncic is one of the best players in the NBA. Kyrie Irving is among the league’s best second fiddles. On the other hand, the Mavericks still feel like they’re a key piece or two away from serious title contention.
This team lacks depth. The supporting pieces on this roster aren’t strong enough. Dallas could use a 3-and-D wing, and they could use a compelling third option.
Could they land both in one player by acquiring Andrew Wiggins of the Golden State Warriors?
NBA Trade Proposal — Dallas Mavericks Land Andrew Wiggins
Golden State Warriors Receive: G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., F/C Maxi Kleber, G/F Josh Green, 2027 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: G/F Andrew Wiggins, G/F Gary Payton III
How a team lands a star is up to them. There are all sorts of paths towards acquiring talent. Just ask the Warriors. This team has been on a dynastic run over the last decade. It all started with the draft.
When the Warriors selected Steph Curry, they must have had faith in him. On the other hand, they surely didn’t expect him to revolutionize basketball. That’s what he did.
The Warriors would win a championship with Curry at the forefront – and then, they’d make a huge acquisition. We’re talking about Kevin Durant. Often, this is the path to building a powerhouse.
NBA TRADES & RUMORS: Andrew Wiggins, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks Updates
You start with the draft, establish yourself as a serious contender, and then trade for another star. With that said, the Mavericks traded for a co-star before ever winning a title behind Doncic.
Would acquiring Wiggins help them accomplish that goal?
Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Absolutely. Wiggins is everything that the Mavericks need. They could use a 3-and-D wing to support their stars in the backcourt. They could also use an additional shot creator as a third option. Wiggins is both rolled into one.
Does this deal kill their already weak depth? Yes. The Mavericks will need to rely on some rookies following this deal. It will likely force Derrick Lively III and Olivier-Maxwell Prosper into the rotation.
At the same time, their top-end talent will rival anybody in the NBA. This deal should make the Mavericks serious title contenders. With that in mind, the Mavericks shouldn’t be worried about parting with draft capital, either. They don’t need it.
NBA TRADES & RUMORS: Andrew Wiggins, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks Updates
By acquiring Wiggins, the Mavericks should put themselves in a position to be in the title mix for years. Should the Warriors put them in that position?
Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
For the Warriors, this is largely about cutting costs. They’re struggling to agree on a contract extension with Klay Thompson. This isn’t about retaining Thompson – this is about something broader. The Warriors are financially strapped, and Wiggins is on a long-term, lucrative deal.
Here, they’re getting off of that deal. Both of the veterans that Golden State is bringing back here are soon to expire. Still, Wiggins is too good for a salary dump. That’s precisely why the Warriors are getting assets in return for him here.
Yes, Green is due for an extension this summer. He won’t be as costly as Wiggins. The Warriors could extend him and include him in a win-now trade or count him among the younger members of their core.

Throw in an unprotected first, and this could entice the Warriors to move on from Wiggins – even if it upsets their stars.
