The Boston Celtics once again look like they will be among the best teams in the NBA during the 2023-24 season. After advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals for two straight seasons, the team will be looking to get over the hump this year and take home the Larry O’Brien trophy.

The Celtics haven’t won the title since 2008 and this group is out to prove doubters wrong. The roster will look a little bit different around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as general manager Brad Stevens shook up the lineup.

Gone are Marcus Smart, Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon and Grant Williams. Acquired this offseason were Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. Boston is hoping they are two big enough upgrades to reach the promised land once again finally.

Based on the projections run by Kevin Pelton of ESPN, the Celtics will certainly have a chance to do so. Based on Pelton’s projections, Boston is expected to be the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference with 54.3 wins. They are the only team projected to win more than 50 games in the NBA.

“Both before and after the addition of Holiday, the Celtics have the NBA’s best projection by a wide margin for a second consecutive season. It did not translate into the league’s best record last year, though Boston was No. 1 in terms of point differential — which is typically more predictive of future results.”

The Celtics are expected to run away with the Eastern Conference, with the Cleveland Cavaliers finishing second with a projected win total of 48.6. Those are the two highest in the league, as the Memphis Grizzlies are projected to win the Western Conference with 48.4 victories.

There will be a lot of pressure on Boston to live up to the expectations this season. Despite reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, last season’s playoffs would be considered a disaster by many.

They went six games against the Atlanta Hawks and seven against the Philadelphia 76ers before losing to the Miami Heat in seven games. Against the Heat, the Celtics went down 3-0 before falling flat again at home in Game 7.
