The Milwaukee Bucks are instant favorites to make it to the NBA Finals after acquiring Damian Lillard. It keeps their star player Giannis Antetokounmpo happy and the team competitive for the next few years. Although Giannis is the star player, he says there is no competition with Lillard for who will be the primary ball handler.
In a video with reporters speaking to Giannis, he talked about the dynamic between him and Lillard. He immediately pointed out that he wants Lillard to “be the primary point guard.”
Giannis emphasized that this is not in any “shape or form a competition between me and him of who’s going to have the ball more.” Ultimately, the Bucks need to allow “Dame to be Dame,” and he will have the “ball more.”
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard & Milwaukee Bucks Updates
That is an important distinction to make for a Bucks team looking to return to championship form. Milwaukee has not returned to the NBA Finals let alone Eastern Conference Finals since winning it all in 2021. Since then, Giannis made it clear a few weeks back that the team needs to remain competitive to peak his interest in re-signing with the team.
The Bucks did not disappoint in the offseason and traded for Lillard when no one thought he would land there. There might have been questions about who will have the ball in their hands more often, and Giannis was quick to clear the air. That is a good sign for a team that had Giannis with the highest usage percentage in the NBA, with Lillard being fourth for the Blazers last season.

It will no doubt be interesting how the duo manage to play without the ball in their hands. However, Giannis trusts that Lillard “will find me” and “my teammates” being the point guard of the team.
