Jayson Tatum told NBA reporter Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report that he’s “extremely happy” the Boston Celtics acquired Jrue Holiday. The Milwaukee Bucks traded Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in the blockbuster Damian Lillard trade. The Blazers, who are in rebuild mode in the post-Lillard era, rerouted Holiday to the Celtics.

“I’m extremely happy to have him,” Tatum told B/R. “Jrue’s one of the most well-respected guys in this league. He’s a champion. We won a gold medal together two summers ago. So, I know him pretty well and know he is a hell of a player, a hell of a teammate. I told him we’re lucky to have him and we’re going to try to get it done.”

Holiday played in 67 games for the Bucks last season. He averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 7.4 assists while shooting 47.9% from the floor, 38.4% from beyond the arc and 85.9% from the free-throw line.

Holiday has career NBA averages of 16.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists with the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans and Bucks. He has made five All-Defensive teams and two All-Star teams. Holiday helped the Bucks win the 2021 championship over the Phoenix Suns.

The Celtics are expected to start Holiday, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis this season. Many pundits believe Boston and Milwaukee will meet in the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

“They’re going to have a hell of a team,” Tatum said about the Bucks. “There’s no way around that. They have two of the best players in this league at two of those prime-time positions. They’re going to be tough, but it’s gonna be fun. I’m looking forward to this season. It’s a lot of really, really good teams in the league and it’s going be some good basketball this season.”
