Kristaps Porzingis dealt with plantar fasciitis over the NBA offseason, but the Latvian big man has fully recovered just in time for his first season with the Boston Celtics. Porzingis opted out of the World Cup to ensure his injury would heal properly, and that decision paid off.

At his Media Day press conference, Porzingis discussed the state of his injury and his recovery process. He revealed that he feels great with no physical limitations heading into the season. According to NBA journalist John Karalis, skipping the World Cup helped his foot return to 100%.

“Medical staff did a great job of loading up slowly, and now that I’m getting close to training camp, I’m perfectly fine; ready to go,” Porzingis said in his presser. “I think it started because I changed shoes during the summer. I think that’s what got the foot a little bit sensitive … The smart decision was to sit out and ensure the foot recovers before the start of the season.”

According to NBA writer Taylor Snow, Celtics general manager Brad Stevens is pleased with Porzingis’ progress.

“He’s played and worked out every day for the last two weeks,” Stevens said.

While it allowed his plantar fasciitis to heal, Porzingis’ decision to miss the World Cup required a huge emotional sacrifice.

“It was such a big deal for me to not be able to play for my country in the World Cup,” Porzingis said. “Really hurt my soul … but I knew it was the right decision. I’m glad I made that tough decision in that moment. Now I’m 100% to start the season.”

A healthy Porzingis should make life much easier for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. His unique skill set could turn the Celtics into a nightmare matchup for their Eastern Conference foes. Tatum talked to NBC Sports Boston about the impact Porzingis will bring to the table.

“I think he just adds another dynamic of versatility,” Tatum said. “As tall as he is, he can stretch the floor. I don’t think we’ve necessarily had a presence as tall as he is and as talented as he is on the offensive end … I’m really, really excited to have him on our team.”

Needless to say, Porzingis has fully bought into Boston’s championship aspirations. The 7-foot-3 center reflected on his new team and the lofty goals they have set.

“Adding myself, adding Jrue now … it’s clear what we’re trying to achieve here,” Porzingis said. “That’s the only goal … We have to live that life daily.”

Porzingis had opportunities to play elsewhere with a potentially bigger role and contract, but he passed them down for Beantown. With his foot healed up and his team ready to compete for a championship, Porzingis should have ample motivation as the new season approaches.
