Clippers Trade For Heat’s Kyle Lowry In Bold Proposal

Kyle Lowry, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

You’ve got to spend money to make money. In NBA terms, you’ve got to spend assets to get players. If you need an upgrade on your roster, it will cost you. Nobody is giving good players away for free.

With that in mind, players have been spending big money on point guards recently. The Milwaukee Bucks gave up everything they had to acquire Damian Lillard. Then, the Boston Celtics spent big on Jrue Holiday. Now, the point guard market is drying up. That could be a problem for the Los Angeles Clippers.

After all, they could use a point guard. With that said, they could still find one. The Clippers have been linked to James Harden, and they may yet land him. It might be difficult to find a deal that works for both sides. Could the Clippers settle for less and acquire Kyle Lowry from the Miami Heat?

The Trade Proposal

Miami Heat Receive: F/C Marcus Morris Sr., F Robert Covington
Los Angeles Clippers Receive: G Kyle Lowry, 2026 Second-Round Pick (LAL via MIA)

Why not Harden? He’s a better player than Lowry. He’s available. Harden has requested a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers. He’s an LA native. What’s the hangup here?

Well, put yourself in the Clippers’ shoes. What would you give up for Harden? Remember, he’s on an expiring contract. Harden has a history of leaving reams. If he’s unhappy about anything, he becomes a flight risk. Would you surrender an unprotected first-round pick for Harden? How about Terrance Mann?

Perhaps he’s worth that risk. For all of Harden’s problems, he remains one of the best playmakers in the National Basketball Association. That said, if the organization hesitates to acquire Harden, we couldn’t blame them. Should they turn their attention to Lowry?

Why The Los Angeles Clippers Do The Deal

It’s worth noting that the Clippers have a point guard on their roster. They have one who was once the league’s MVP. Granted, Russell Westbrook is not the triple-double machine he used to be. Still, the Clippers don’t necessarily need to add a star guard. They could add Lowry and have him and Westbrook split duties at the position.

Let’s look at who else the Clippers have on their roster. To be specific, they’ve got a lot of 3-and-D wings. The presence of Nicolas Batum renders Covington expendable. That’s likely a large part of why Covington fell out of this team’s rotation last season.

On the other hand, the Clippers will miss Morris Sr. He’s a bulkier wing with a different function from Batum or Covington – Morris Sr. can play some 5. At the same time, the Clippers could use a point guard who can shoot – this should be a trade-off worth making for them. Can we say the same for the Heat?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

Meanwhile, the Heat have been seemingly pursuing a point guard all summer. This team was heavily linked to Damian Lillard. In the end, they couldn’t land him. Now, we’ve got them trading a point guard. What gives?

Miami gets most of its playmaking from Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, anyway. They don’t necessarily need a conventional point guard. Moreover, the team just signed R.J. Hampton. Josh Richardson can soak up some minutes at the one as well. Even after missing out on Lillard, the Heat may be able to spare Lowry.

The Heat lacked options, especially if they’re adding two players at the four in this year’s NBA Finals. Caleb Martin was a little too small for Aaron Gordon, and Kevin Love was a little too slow for him. Both Morris Sr. and Covington would be better options. If the Heat want them, they must send the Clippers someone in return.
