Everybody wants to feel wanted. NBA players are no exception. They want to play for a team that values their services. So, when an NBA player ends up in trade rumors, it can create problems for everyone. Suddenly, the player feels unwanted.

Does Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat feel that way? It’s certainly possible. Herro’s name has been in trade rumors all summer. He was widely seen as a candidate to be moved in exchange for Damian Lillard. Now, Lillard is a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. Herro remains on the Heat – even though he was openly included in trade offers for Lillard.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter. Trades are part of business in the NBA, and Herro may understand that. On the other hand, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he felt devalued by the Heat organization. Could they send him to the Los Angeles Lakers?

The Trade Proposal

Miami Heat Receive: G D’Angelo Russell, G Gabe Vincent, 2029 First-Round Pick (LA)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Tyler Herro

On media day, Herro addressed those trade rumors. He addressed the teams that didn’t want him. It didn’t feel like he was addressing the Miami Heat. Instead, Herro’s comments seemed directed at the Portland Trail Blazers.

By all accounts, the Blazers weren’t interested in him. That makes sense. This team has a lot of young talent, but before the Lillard trade, it was almost exclusively in the backcourt. Between Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and Anfernee Simons, the Blazers didn’t have space for Herro. His similarities with Simons made him an especially poor fit on this roster.

Just don’t expect Herro to see it that way. He’s a competitor. Herro likely thinks he’d be the best player on Portland’s roster. That mentality has gotten him this far – why not stick with it? That said, should the Lakers be interested in a player with Herro’s mentality?

Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal

Enough about feelings and enough about business. This is about basketball. Ultimately, this deal would give both of these teams a better-fitting roster. Let’s start with the Lakers.

Is Russell the best fit alongside LeBron James? Sure, someone needs to relieve him of playmaking duties occasionally. James is aging, and he can’t do it alone. Still, is a playmaker like Russell necessary? Typically, James has thrived alongside scorers with secondary playmaking abilities.

That’s who Herro is. He’d be the perfect third banana alongside James and Anthony Davis. Herro is the best player in this deal, and he’d make the contending Lakers a better team. Should the Heat give him up?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

The Heat give up the best player in this deal. With that said, they’re addressing a need. With James on the roster, the Lakers can afford to downgrade their playmaking. On the other hand, the Heat need an upgrade at the point guard slot.

Here, they’re getting two. The Heat know what they’re getting from Vincent – he was on the team just last season. Meanwhile, Russell adds a dynamic of playmaking that they don’t currently have at the position. At the same time, the incoming players aren’t even the main reason why Miami does this deal.

Why did they lose out on Lillard this summer? Isn’t it partly because they’re low on draft capital? If Miami makes this deal, they’ll have one of the most valuable first-round picks around the league. The next time a star is available, they may have an easier time making an offer for him – provided that they want him.
