One NBA writer is proposing that the Dallas Mavericks trade for Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela in a blockbuster proposal. Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Mavericks and Hawks:
The Deal: Atlanta Hawks trade Clint Capela and Jalen Johnson to Dallas Mavericks for Tim Hardaway Jr., Dereck Lively II and a 2027 lottery-protected first-round pick
“Capela is more consistent as a rebounder and rim protector than the centers of the Dončić era have been too,” Bailey wrote in his latest NBA trade column. “This moves checks boxes for Dallas on both ends of the floor, and it eliminates the waiting period for doing so that might’ve been there with Dereck Lively II.”
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Clint Capela, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks Updates
Capela averaged 12.0 points and 11.0 rebounds last season for the Hawks in 65 games while shooting 65.3% from the field. He signed a two-year, $45.5 million extension with Atlanta in September 2021. The 29-year-old, who began his career with the Houston Rockets, will earn $20.6 million next season.
The Mavericks are interested in acquiring Capela from the Hawks, sources told NBA Analysis Network. Dallas could start Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Grant Williams, Olivier-Maxence Prosper and Capela if the Mavericks figured out a way to acquire Capela from the Hawks.
The Mavericks won just 38 games in 2022-23. The team was only 5-11 in games Doncic and Irving played together. That was the worst winning percentage (.313) for a pair of teammates who were both All-Stars since the ABA-NBA merger in 1976-77, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
