There has been some speculation about the future of Boston Celtics point guard Malcolm Brogdon. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year award winner has been mentioned in trade rumors throughout the offseason as he is one of the last tradeable pieces the team has to really shake up their roster.

Due $45 million over the next two seasons, Brogdon’s deal would be the perfect centerpiece for a blockbuster to help match salary. Given the little information from both sides, it is fair for people to assume that something could be going on in the background.

“Brogdon and his camp have been quiet this summer, and members of the Celtics front office have mostly avoided or deflected questions about the Sixth Man of the Year. Something about the situation just feels slightly off,” wrote Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe.

Brogdon averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 26 minutes per game for Boston last season, playing in 67 games all off the bench. His performance did dip at the end of the regular season, and he struggled at times in the playoffs, where a lot of the speculation stems from.

But, according to Himmelsbach, there aren’t any plans right now for the Celtics to trade Brogdon. He could be looking at an even bigger role in the 2023-24 season after Boston shook up their backcourt this offseason, trading Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzles as part of the three-team trade that landed Kristaps Porzinigs in Beantown.

“But the indications I’ve gotten are that the Celtics are not considering trading Brogdon any more than they are considering trading any other player. His sour ending to last year aside, it is worth remembering Brogdon’s value to the Celtics last year. And Smart’s departure figures to only increase his role.”

This will be something to keep an eye on as the season moves along as Derrick White has emerged as the Celtics’ new point guard. Payton Pritchard is a capable backup and should see an increased role this season as well.

Unless head coach Joe Mazzulla plans to use Jayson Tatum at point guard more, which has been rumored, Brogdon is an integral part of this roster. White and Pritchard are the only players with lead guard and point guard experience on the roster. Unless a deal is in the works for another ball-handler, Brogdon shouldn’t be going anywhere.
