One NBA writer is proposing that the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves make a bold trade featuring Naz Reid and Doug McDermott. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Spurs and Timberwolves:

Trade idea: Minnesota Timberwolves trade Naz Reid to San Antonio Spurs for Doug McDermott, 2026 second-round pick (via UTA) and 2027 second-round pick

“McDermott remains one of the best long-range bombers in the Association,” Buckley wrote in his latest NBA trade column. “He’s a career 41 percent shooter from distance, and he has eclipsed that already elite splash rate in three of the past four seasons. Defenses always have to keep an eye on him, which makes life a bit easier for everyone else on the floor.

“A deal like this would make Minnesota older, but if the Wolves are as committed to a win-now mentality as the Gobert deal suggested, they may not matter much to them. They could reasonably conclude they’d get more out of a supreme spacer like McDermott than they would a backup big man in Reid, and they’d net a pair of second-rounders to add to their depleted NBA draft pick collection.”

McDermott appeared in 64 games for the Spurs last season. He averaged 10.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 45.7% from the field, 41.3% from beyond the arc and 75.7% from the free-throw line.

Meanwhile, Reid appeared in 68 games for the Timberwolves in 2022-23. He averaged 11.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting 53.7% from the floor, 34.6% from 3 and 67.7% from the free-throw line. Minnesota signed Reid to a three-year, $42 million extension in June.

The Spurs won only 22 games last season. They had the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and selected Victor Wembanyama.

The Timberwolves, meanwhile, lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs in five games.
