Malcolm Brogdon, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, NBA Trade Rumors

Every team in the NBA is in a different place. Some are further apart than others. Some teams are in the thick of title contention. Meanwhile, others are on the dawn of a new era.

Take the San Antonio Spurs. They won’t compete for the NBA title next year. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the Spurs were near the bottom of the NBA’s standings. It doesn’t matter. The Spurs now have Victor Wembanyama on their roster. The future is bright in San Antonio – no matter what happens this year.

By contrast, the Boston Celtics should be feeling a little more pressure. This team is young, but their best players are approaching their prime. The Celtics need to win an NBA title sooner than later. Could sending Malcolm Brogdon to the Spurs help them do that?

The Trade Proposal

Boston Celtics Receive: F Doug McDermott, G Devonte’ Graham
San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Malcolm Brogdon

At the same time, every team in the NBA has the same goal – an NBA championship. They’re either trying to win one now, or they’re trying to win one later. With that said, both of these organizations are well-versed in winning championships in the National Basketball Association.

For a while, contention was a given for the Spurs. They’ve been one of the most uniquely successful teams in league history. Over the course of two decades, the Spurs never won back-to-back titles. Yet, they won five championships overall. Some have described it as a prolonged dynasty.

The Celtics have never had such a run. With that said, they’ve had full-blown dynasties. The Celtics have been repeat champions on multiple occasions. With that said, they’ve only won one title over that same period of time in which the Spurs were contending. Would this deal help them win their second title of the modern era?

Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal

It seems as though there are injury concerns surrounding Brogdon. That’s a big deal for the Celtics. They can’t afford a hit to their depth chart. The Celtics need to put themselves in the best position to win an NBA title that they can.

So, this is largely about protecting themselves from injuries. The Celtics are receiving two reliable players here. They’re also both useful. Brogdon may be the best player in this deal but don’t sell Graham or McDermott short.

The former is a solid playmaker with good floor vision. The latter is one of the best shooters in the NBA. The Celtics bolster their depth here and improve their injury outlook as well. What do the Spurs get from the deal?

Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal

Well, the Spurs get Malcolm Brogdon. He’s the best player in this trade. Meanwhile, if he gets injured, it won’t hurt them as badly as it would hurt Boston. Unlike the Celtics, the Spurs have got time to wait.

They could use some veteran mentorship. That’s a big part of this for the Spurs as well. Brogdon is widely respected among his peers. He can teach these young Spurs how to be professionals – even if he does get hurt.

If he doesn’t? Well, the Spurs may not be among the worst teams in the NBA after all. If Wembanyama is ahead of schedule, Brogdon could be a meaningful addition to this roster. Either way, it’s a win/win situation for the Spurs. Given the position they’re in, they’re playing with house money this season.
