Team culture. It’s something that gets discussed a lot in NBA circles. What does it really mean? When we talk about a team’s culture, what are we talking about?

Well, we’re talking about a set of principles and priorities that a team expects its players to follow. A team’s culture is their identity. With that in mind, perhaps no team has a stronger culture than the Miami Heat. Their principles are clear. The Heat expect their players to work hard, focus on defense, and out-hustle their opponents.

So, some players are just Heat players. Hard-nosed players. Guys that want to win more than they want to score. Guys like, for example, Alex Caruso of the Chicago Bulls. Here’s a deal that has him landing in Miami.

The Trade Proposal

Chicago Bulls Receive: G/F Duncan Robinson, 2027 First-Round Pick (MIA)
Miami Heat Receive: G/F Alex Caruso, G Jevon Carter

Shouldn’t every team desire such a culture? Why would the Heat have different goals? Why would any team accept anything less than the same standard that Miami does?

Well, the NBA is a limited market. There are only so many players who fit the prior description. So, some teams try to corner the market in different ways. A team may emphasize basketball intelligence over work ethic. Some teams are strictly concerned with talent. They may even be willing to take on troubled players if they’re good enough at basketball.

Not Miami. This organization has always been concerned with preserving their culture. With that said, they also need to be concerned with a player’s basketball abilities. Is Caruso the right fit for this team?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

Caruso is not the guard that Miami has been linked to this summer. Surely, you’ve heard about the Damian Lillard situation. He wants to go to Miami, and we can safely assume that Miami would like to add him. What we can’t do is assume that they’ll be able to add him. The Heat don’t have the most compelling offer to make for Lillard.

On the other hand, they should be able to afford Caruso. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that this team just made a trip to the NBA Finals. The Heat may not need to add a superstar. The addition of a highly impactful defensive player could be enough to get them over the top.

Caruso happens to be one of the best defensive guards in the NBA. His ability to lock down the point of attack and make defensive plays is elite. Moreover, Carter is a solid backup who fits Miami’s culture as well. Should the Bulls give up two hardworking, quality players?

Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal

The Bulls will want to wait and see before making this deal. In fact, they’ll have to wait and see. The team just signed Carter. He isn’t eligible to be traded for a while. If the Bulls are surprisingly strong to start the year, they may want to hold onto these players.

On the other hand, if the Bulls are once again disappointing, they have got to make moves. This team cannot afford to keep wasting seasons. If the Bulls aren’t bound for the playoffs by this year’s trade deadline, they’ve got to make changes. This would be a good start.

After all, what does a rebuilding team need more than first-round picks? We can assume that this move would be accompanied by other moves. In all likelihood, the Bulls would be trading Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic as well. In time, they’ll hope to establish a winning culture.
