Mavericks Trade For Blazers’ Jerami Grant In Bold Proposal

Jerami Grant, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, NBA Trade Rumors

At some point, we’ve all had buyer’s remorse. You bought the biggest TV in the warehouse – and you never find time to watch it. It happens. In fact, it happens to NBA teams as well.

At the moment, the Portland Trail Blazers are probably feeling some buyer’s remorse. This team offered Jerami Grant a significant extension this summer. It was a fair contract for a quality player. With that said, Portland likely offered the deal with Damian Lillard in mind. Now that he’s requested a trade, Portland probably wishes that they weren’t committed to the talented forward.

Are the Dallas Mavericks feeling buyer’s remorse over Kyrie Irving? They shouldn’t be. This team had no choice but to extend Irving after trading for him at last year’s deadline. With that said, the superstar point guard is notoriously volatile. The Mavericks had better hope that they have a strong 2023-24 season. Could acquiring Jerami Grant help them do so?

The Trade Proposal

Portland Trail Blazers receive: G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., C Richaun Holmes, G/F Josh Green, 2027 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks receive: F Jerami Grant

Could the Mavericks learn from the Blazers? Perhaps. At the same time, they may have done so already. In acquiring Irving, the Mavericks may have avoided a mistake that Portland made in building around Lillard. They got Luka Doncic an appropriate co-star.

Did the Blazers ever do that for Lillard? It’s debatable. For a long time, Lillard shared a backcourt with CJ McCollum. The duo had some success. At the same time, they were always too small to share a backcourt without getting exploited on defense. Moreover, it’s debatable as to whether McCollum was ever talented enough to be a true second option on a championship contender.

That’s undeniable in regards to Irving. There’s no talent issue in Dallas in terms of their top two. Still, there’s work to be done in Dallas. This team needs a stronger supporting cast around their star duo. Would Grant be this team’s missing piece?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

We think so. What is this Dallas team missing? Well, they could use a defensive anchor. The Mavericks have been linked to plenty of defensive big men this summer. At the same time, they could also use a third offensive option, and a versatile 3-and-D wing wouldn’t hurt either.

Grant is both of those things. That’s what makes him a perfect fit here. He can function as a 3-and-D wing. At the same time, Grant can create his own shot when needed. This is the type of utility player that basically fits on any team.

He’s worth the price that Dallas is paying here. This team shouldn’t be hoarding draft capital. Meanwhile, Green is due for an extension next summer anyway. Dallas would do well to include him in a deal to upgrade their roster. Should Portland be interested in the young wing?

Why The Portland Trail Blazers Do The Deal

Absolutely. Green is not likely to be a star player. Still, he’s an energetic, athletic young wing with some defensive value. If Green can get his shot to fall on a consistent basis, he could be a core piece for Portland on a long-term basis. At the moment, they’re lacking in young wings like Green.

That’s why we didn’t include Jaden Hardy in this deal. Portland already has a glut of young guards in Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and Anfernee Simons. The Blazers don’t need another young scorer. On the other hand, they could use more draft capital – after all, no rebuilding team can have too much of that.

Of course, this is all under the assumption that the Blazers are trading Lillard. As of now, it seems like they’d prefer to keep him. Something tells us that the dissolution of that relationship is inevitable. If so, Portland should be happy to make this deal. They won’t have buyer’s remorse if they’re able to turn Grant into this type of value.
