Mavericks Trade For Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns In Bold Proposal

Karl-Anthony Towns, Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves, NBA Trade Rumors

Are superteams dying in the NBA? We don’t think so. They may be declining in popularity, but they’ll never die. Without fail, someone will always try to put one together.

Take a look at the Phoenix Suns. They already had Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. That was enough star power to compete for the title. Now, they’ve got Bradley Beal as well. There are no guaranteed titles in the NBA, but the Suns have the potential to be dominant.

Do the Dallas Mavericks have the same potential? It’s hard to say. If the pieces on this roster click, the Mavericks could be in the title hunt. Still, with two star players in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving surrounded by role players, it would be hard to call them a super team. Could the Mavericks change that by acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves?

The Trade Proposal

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G/F Tim Hardaway Jr., F Grant Williams, G Jaden Hardy, G/F Josh Green,  2027 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL), 2030 First-Round Pick (Swap – DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F/C Karl-Anthony Towns

Superteams may not be dying. They aren’t exactly thriving, either. Plenty of critics are questioning the validity of this team-building strategy. Just look at recent NBA champions.

The Denver Nuggets were as organically built as one could imagine. The Milwaukee Bucks did trade for Jrue Holiday, but they weren’t a free agency-driven superteam. Then, you’ve got the Golden State Warriors. They’ve won titles both as a superteam and a homegrown superpower. Still, it’s worth noting that if they hadn’t won a title first, they may have never attracted Kevin Durant.

In the end, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for winning an NBA title. Each winner looks a little different. Still, the most important ingredient is undeniably talent. Does this deal give the Mavericks enough talent to win it all?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

This isn’t the route that most are expecting the Mavericks to travel. With Doncic and Irving on the roster, they’re widely expected to pursue a defensive anchor at the 5 spot. Meanwhile, Towns is one of the weakest defensive big men in the NBA. Still, they’d have to at least give this deal some consideration.

Luka Doncic is already difficult enough to guard. He’s led deep playoff runs as a heliocentric ball-handler. In theory, putting him next to Irving should make the Mavericks one of the most lethal teams in the NBA. Add Towns into the mix, and they could be unstoppable.

Yes, they’ll struggle to get their own stops. This could be a recipe for a defensive disaster. Still, if Dallas wants to lean all the way into offense, they’ll consider this trade. Should the Timberwolves consider this trade?

Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal

Remember what we just said? Towns is one of the weakest defensive big men in the NBA. Unfortunately, that’s going to impact his trade value to an extent. If you think this is a weak return, you’re not likely to be alone.

Sure. On the other hand, Towns has proven difficult to build around. The Wolves may not do much better than this. That’s OK – this team has Anthony Edwards. He looks like a future superstar. Minnesota should do whatever is best for Edwards. This deal may help to maximize him.

After all, it’s got them adding several core pieces that could help them in the long run. Green and Williams are both stout defensive wings who’ll make his life easier. Hardy’s fit alongside Edwards as a fellow volume scorer could be questionable, but if it is, the Wolves could trade him down the line. If they fit nicely, who knows? They could be the basis of a homegrown superteam.
