This Blockbuster Heat-Mavericks Trade Proposal Swaps Tyler Herro, Kyrie Irving

One NBA writer is proposing that the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks make a trade centered around Tyler Herro and Kyrie Irving. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between the Heat and Mavericks:

The Trade: Kyrie Irving to the Heat for Tyler Herro, Caleb Martin and Nikola Jović

“Dallas’ decision to re-sign Irving this offseason was as much about retaining an asset as it was keeping the high-scoring guard around,” Buckley wrote in his latest NBA trade column. “After losing Jalen Brunson for nothing the previous summer, the Mavs couldn’t afford to let go of another impact guard. But keeping Irving won’t necessarily cure what ails this team, which went just 9-18 after he debuted. Dallas struggled with depth this past season, and while it added a few rotation players over the offseason, it might not still have enough to ascend in the West.

“This deal could give Luka Dončić a capable co-star in Herro (a 20-point scorer each of the past two seasons), plus a three-and-D wing in Martin. Jović is a wild card, but he’s a 6’10” combo forward who can score and create. Because of Irving’s availability issues, few teams might view him as a positive asset at this point, but Miami could see him as a suitable alternative if its Damian Lillard pursuit doesn’t pan out.”

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Kyrie Irving, Tyler Herro, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat Updates

Irving averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in 20 games with the Mavericks last season. He finished the 2022-23 season with averages of 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists with the Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks.

Irving has a 15% trade kicker in his new contract with the Mavericks, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. A trade kicker is the percentage of a player’s salary that is awarded as a bonus in the event of a trade. Irving re-signed with the Mavericks on a three-year, $126 million contract on the first day of free agency.

Dallas won just 38 games in 2022-23. The team was only 5-11 in games Irving and Luka Doncic played together. That was the worst winning percentage (.313) for a pair of teammates who were both All-Stars since the ABA-NBA merger in 1976-77, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Herro has removed “Miami Heat guard” from his Twitter bio because he’s expecting to be involved in the Damian Lillard trade. Lillard has requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers and only wants to get traded to the Heat. However, Portland and Miami haven’t made any progress on a deal.

A Kentucky product, Herro averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists last season for the Heat. He was third on the team in points per game, trailing only Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.
