One NBA writer is proposing that the Phoenix Suns acquire Clint Capela and Saddiq Bey from the Atlanta Hawks in a blockbuster trade. Lee Tran of Fadeaway World proposed the following trade idea between the Hawks and Suns:

Atlanta Hawks Receive: Deandre Ayton

Phoenix Suns Receive: Clint Capela, Saddiq Bey, Kobe Bufkin

“The key addition here for the Suns is Clint Capela, who is a decent defensive center who does not require many touches on the offensive end,” Tran wrote in his latest NBA trade column. “He is a role player who is willing to rebound, hustle, and do the dirty work on the court, and Capela seems like the perfect player to pair with a group of elite score-first stars. This past season, Capela averaged 12.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.

“Saddiq Bey is a 3 and D wing player who found a suitable role on the Hawks last season. He could play a similar role on the Suns, and as a catch-and-shoot wing, he can be a great contributor on offense. Bey had solid overall production last season, putting up 14.1 points while shooting 36.1% from 3PT range.”

Capela averaged 12.0 points and 11.0 rebounds last season for the Hawks in 65 games while shooting 65.3% from the field. He signed a two-year, $45.5 million extension with Atlanta in September 2021. The 29-year-old, who began his career with the Houston Rockets, will earn $20.6 million next season.

Bey is the other key player the Suns would acquire from the Hawks for Ayton in this trade pitch. The 24-year-old averaged 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 77 games for the Detroit Pistons and Hawks last season while shooting 42.2% overall, 36.1% from 3 and 86.1% from the free-throw line.

The Suns haven’t traded Ayton yet because there is no viable trade right now turning the center into the kinds of players (or picks) that would maintain or boost the Suns’ title odds, according to Zach Lowe of ESPN. It will be fascinating to see if Ayton lasts the entire 2023-24 season in Phoenix.
