One NBA writer is proposing that the Charlotte Hornets acquire Collin Sexton from the Utah Jazz in a blockbuster trade. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade between the Jazz and Hornets:
Utah Jazz receive: Terry Rozier
Charlotte Hornets receive: Collin Sexton, 2029 second-round pick and 2023 second-round pick
“Sexton, who only turns 25 in January, has almost always produced when he’s played (career 19 points per game on 46.4/38/82.6 shooting), but his stats have lacked substance (net differential of minus-4.1 points per 100 possessions),” Buckley wrote in his latest NBA trade column. “If the Hornets can solve this puzzle, they could have a young, valuable player on their hands—plus a pair of future picks—in exchange for a veteran they haven’t won with in four seasons.”

Sexton averaged 14.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season for the Jazz while shooting 50.6% from the floor, 39.3% from 3 and 81.9% from the free-throw line in 48 games. The point guard signed a four-year, $70.9 million deal in September 2022. He’ll make $17.3 million next season.
The 24-year-old Sexton has career NBA averages of 19.0 points, 2.9 boards and 3.2 assists with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Jazz while shooting 46.4% overall, 38.0% from 3-point range and 82.6% from the free-throw line. He was the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Alabama. The Cavaliers traded Sexton to the Jazz last offseason in the Donovan Mitchell trade.

Neither the Hornets nor Jazz made the playoffs last season. Charlotte is building around LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. Sexton could potentially be a good fit next to them, although his ball-dominant style of play may not mesh well with Ball.
