The NBA has fined Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards $50,000 for recklessly swinging a chair in frustration that stuck two bystanders as he exited the court at the conclusion of the Timberwolves’ playoff game against the Denver Nuggets on April 25 at Ball Arena.

In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, the NBA’s review of the matter was deferred until after the criminal investigation into Edwards’ conduct concluded with charges dismissed in July.

The Timberwolves lost to the Nuggets in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs in five games. Edwards missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer of Game 5 and swung a chair in frustration as exited the court.

Minnesota and Edwards agreed to a five-year maximum contract extension that could be worth up to $260 million this summer. Edwards would have become a restricted free agent next summer if the Timberwolves didn’t sign him to an extension. The franchise was never going to let that happen.

The Timberwolves drafted Edwards with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft. The Atlanta native is averaging 21.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in the NBA. Edwards put up a career-high 24.6 points per game last season. He made the All-Star team and helped the Timberwolves make the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Edwards is represented by Bill Duffy and WME Sports. He recently joined the agency in a move that also included plans to expand his business dealings off the court, particularly with Three Fifths Media, a production company he launched with business manager Justin Holland in 2019.

The 22-year-old Edwards has established himself as one of the best players in the NBA. After signing this new contract, the Georgia native will likely be under pressure to lead the Timberwolves past the second round of the playoffs.
