Pascal Siakam and the Toronto Raptors have had no substantive conversations surrounding an extension, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Siakam has one year left on his contract. The NBA champion has never requested a trade from the Raptors, who are hesitant to give him a max contract extension.
“This will be Siakam’s eighth NBA season, so he can sign for 30 percent of the salary cap either now via extension or next offseason as a free agent with the Raptors or any other franchise,” Charania wrote. “The Raptors are eligible to sign Siakam to a maximum contract extension of four years and at least $192 million. Thus far, there have been no substantive conversations surrounding an extension, league sources involved in the discussions who are not authorized to speak publicly tell The Athletic. And for Siakam’s part, the two-way stalwart has never requested to be traded, those sources added.”
Siakam signed a four-year, $136 million rookie contract extension with the Raptors in October 2019. He will make $37.9 million next season. Toronto lost the 9-10 NBA play-in game to the Chicago Bulls and didn’t make the 2023 NBA playoffs. Nick Nurse was fired as head coach and replaced by Darko Rajakovic and Fred VanVleet left the Raptors for the Houston Rockets in NBA free agency.
