Warriors Trade For Cavaliers’ Jarrett Allen In Bold Proposal

Jarrett Allen, Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

Around the NBA, there are differing opinions on the value of big men. Some bigs transcend the discussion. Players like Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid have as much value as any player in the NBA.

They are outliers. Otherwise, most big men are role players. Meanwhile, bigs who can’t shoot are at the center of the discussion. Some will say that teams shouldn’t invest heavily in a non-shooting big. Others will say that if they can anchor your defense, it’s a moot point.

With that context in mind, it’s been suggested that the Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to trade Jarrett Allen. It’s also being rumored that they’re not getting the types of offers that they’d like for him. Could the Golden State Warriors make a compelling offer?

The Trade Proposal

Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: G Chris Paul, 2026 First-Round Pick (GSW) 2026 Second-Round Pick (ATL via GSW), 2028 Second-Round Pick (ATL via GSW)
Golden State Warriors Receive: C Jarrett Allen, G Ricky Rubio

There’s also the issue of scarcity. Teams may be apprehensive to spend big money on the best defensive bigs in the league. After all, they can get comparable production at a much lower cost. Just look at the Warriors’ Kevon Looney.

Looney is good. He’s not one of the best defensive bigs in the NBA. Still, he’s willing to do the dirty work. Looney hustles for loose balls, sets good screens, rebounds, and defends. He’s been a valuable member of the Warriors’ dynasty.

In fact, he’s been valuable in a couple of ways. He’s helped, but also, Looney’s small contract has given the Warriors flexibility in team building. On the other hand, Allen’s price point is much higher. Should the Warriors pay it?

Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal

Well, Allen would be a major upgrade over Looney. We don’t mean to disrespect the Warriors’ longtime big man, but it’s true. Allen is a much more impactful player.

That will hold especially true on the defensive end of the floor. Allen is one of the best rim protectors in the NBA, but he’s also able to defend in space. Still, he’ll help on offense as well. Allen is a solid passer, a great screener, and a good pick-and-roll finisher.

The Warriors couldn’t do this deal tomorrow. They just traded for Paul. If he’s clicking with the team by the deadline, they may prefer to hang onto their assets. On the other hand, if the fit between Paul and the Warriors looks questionable, it may be worth parting with a first-round pick to upgrade at the 5. Should the Cavaliers part with Allen?

Why The Cleveland Cavaliers Do The Deal

As we said, it’s rumored that the Cavaliers could part with Allen. Those rumors make some sense. Allen’s fit alongside Evan Mobley appeared suspect in this year’s playoffs. Their combined inability to shoot stifled the Cavaliers’ offense on a regular basis.

So, they would probably do well to shift Mobley to the 5. In time, they should look to pair him with a floor-spacing wing who plays the 4. This deal doesn’t land them one. With that in mind, some Cavaliers fans may wonder what we’re thinking here.

We’re thinking that the Cavaliers are very low on draft capital. Acquiring an unprotected first would be huge for this organization: down the road, they could trade it for Mobley’s long-term frontcourt partner. In the meantime, they could use a backup point guard with Rubio taking time off to deal with his mental health. Paul would be a good fit – even if it means parting with a quality big man.
